The CoMA Festival - Art Music for the Future
|
The Växjö Electronic Music Festival first saw the light of day in 1986 - and is now
the oldest festival of electro-accoustic music in Sweden! Although such an honorary
label is not easily acquired, the festival is now changing its name to CoMA - Art Music for
the Future. Why change the name of such a venerable phenomenon?
|
In recent decades, electro-accoustic music has undergone a
change and is today well established, to say the least. Much
remains of its experimental, cross-boundary, questioning ambition,
but this has inevitably been de-dramatised by the passage of time - the
presence of tape recorders, electronic devices and computers on the concert
stage no longer shocks. As a result, electro-accoustic music has increasingly
joined hands with the rest of the art music scene.
|
The CoMA Festival - Art music for the Future - takes both present reality
and the future as its starting points. Over the coming years, the
festival will continue to be a forum for electro-accoustic music, but
also for accoustic music. Similarly, innovative works, experimental
cross-boundary music, will have a natural place at the event. Twenty years'
experience of organising the festival has amply demonstrated the need to provide
a forum for new, unproven works and initiatives.
