From the film for
Interface - a concert series with Ensemble Ars Nova

Interface is a series of artistic projects situated in the confluence of music and the sister arts and technologies. Set in concert form, Interface tunes into the tangible harmonies and discords, musical and otherwise, generated in the fusion of disparate yet related artistic energies seeking a common ground.

I Saw It All

In the spirit of Interface, Ensemble Ars Nova continues its exploration of the concert as means of expression with this collaboration between filmmaker Göran Olson and composer Jonas Bohlin.

A work for soprano, chamber ensemble, and film, I Saw It All attempts to articulate a solitary
individual´s experience of war. The piece is rooted in the stories of Sula, a child - and a soldier - in war-ravaged Chechnya. The soprano sings excerpts from interviews with the child, interspersed with soundbites from media war reports. Jonas Bohlin´s ethereal music cradles Sula´s matter-of-fact narratives - the first time he held a gun in his hands, the first time he stood face-to-face with a Russian tank, the first time he killed a man. Göran Olsson´s film installation, projected simultaneously on adjoining screens, opens up additional layers of counterpoint with documentary visual material from the war, abstract patterns, word graphics from the libretto, and underwater footage. The diver´s weightless drift and existential solitude fues with the cradling music to provide a chamber that echoes Sula´s straightforward, brutal narrative.
