Magnus Andersson, guitar
Jonny Axelsson, percussion

Jörgen Pettersson, saxophone

Ensemble Son consists of some of Sweden’s foremost musicians in the field of contemporary music all united by having the ending of their names in common (a prerequisite for becoming a member). The unusual instrumentation of the founders of the group has forced the ensemble to commission new works. One of the main ideas of the group is explore programmes that in one way or another are “portrait” in the broadest sense. For this reason they invite guests to collaborate with them.

Among important projects realised so far are “El Cimarron” by Henze, “ Dr Cayabyab - the death penalty as music” a portrait of Helmut Oehring and “Improvisation/Notation” with Barry Guy in music by Barrett, Doyle and Guy. “Improvisation/Notation” was recorded live last year in Stockholm and is soon due for release on CD by Caprice Records. Recently they premiered Overdub/Overdoubt by Maurizio Pisati in Padova a large one hour work that includes electronics and video projection.

Ensemble Son has performed in many countries and always to wide critical acclaim.

About the music

Earth-Bow
for saxophone, trombone, el-guitar and percussion - Christer Lindwall (1950 -)

This piece is inspired by African music, but not in the sense of how to use formal musical parameters (as pitch orders, rhythmic patterns etc.) as in a more philosophical and social way.
The title (Earth-Bow) is also a name of an African bow instrument. This instrument consists of a flexible wooden pole planted in the ground. A string is stretched from the upper end to a small plank or a piece of bark that covers a hole in the ground. The hole acts as a resonator. When the string is plucked or struck, the sound becomes a curious voice that seems to emanate from the inside of the earth. This explains why this instrument is used so much in magic.
Earth-Bow was commissioned by the Swedish Concert Institute and is dedicated to Magnus Andersson, Jonny Axelsson, Ivo Nilsson and Jörgen Pettersson

TRE EQUALE (1988)
per chitarra, trombone e vibrafono - Ivo Nilsson (1966-)

Where is the meltingpoint between three so very different instruments as guitar, trombone and vibraphone? This question was the point of departure in working on this triptych and also the frame to explore. The mellow and melancholic texture of this work may be associated with quartet by Beethoven with the same title.

Ivo Nilsson

2 Intermovimenti (1999)
for alto Saxophone, ukulele and percussion - Erik Förare (1955-)

Erik Förare studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm with Prof.
Gunnar Bucht a.o. in the years 1975-79. He then studied musicology at the Stockholm
University. In the 1980- and 90-ties he attended the Darmstädter Ferienkurse. Since the student years he has mainly written Chamber- and Vocal music, later to start with large ensembles.

The "2 Intermovimenti" was a commission from the Swedish National Consert
Institute, in 1999, for a "Composer-portrait" concert. It has a really unusual and "odd"
combination of instruments. The "melodic" wind-instrument Saxophone combined with plucked and beated
ones here creates an "intimate miniature". The 2 pieces complete each other, in that the
first is "open" and extrovert, and that the second is "closed" and introvert.

Souci de l´ame
Peter Schuback (1947-)

Seven Heaven
for saxophone, didgeridoo, ukulele and percussion - Sten Melin (1957-)

From the four corners of the world, viva la musica globale, in quest of ethernal bliss. With traces of aborigines, balkan, cajunpop and the barbaric yawp that can only come from a fotball fan´s throat. Flower power of the nineties for consuming souls. A musical outburst by the composer Sten Melin.

Sten Melin was born on 10th October 1957. After mainly studing the trumpet at the Framnäs School of Music, he studied composition privately whith Sven-David Sandström from 1977 onwards. From 1980 until the spring of 1985 he studied composition at Royal College of Music in Stockholm, first with Gunnar Bucht and Pär Lindgren and then, once again with Sandström. He is president of the Soceity of Swedish Composers since 1999.
